Dressage In Harmony: From Basic to Grand Prix
Published in Hardcover by Half Halt Pr (01 November, 1998)
Authors: Walter Zettl and Paul Schopf
Average review score:

The best equestrian book out there.
This is, by far, the best and easiest-to-understand book on dressage that I have read! I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to understand how to train your horse in a non-confrontational manner up the levels of dressage. This book is a must read for novice or advanced readers!

Dressage you can learn from a book!
There is something about the 'master horsemen' that makes them more than great riders. Walter Zettl and Alois Podhajsky are two of my favourites.

They explain dressage, riding, horses and horsemanship with clarity, passion and detail so that you really can learn a lot of lessons by reading their books.

This book will provide you with detailed explainations of dressage movements, aids and training, as well as commenting on common faults and how to address them. Like all the masters Herr Zettl discusses the development of a dressage horse and provides a logical framework for progression (and frequent warnings on the hazards of taking shortcuts).

Excellent book!
Along with providing excellent training information, Herr Zettl repeatedly stresses respect and love for the horse. Everyone who has borrowed this book from me has ultimately purchased a copy for themselves!

Emotional Healing at Warp Speed: The Power of EMDR
Published in Hardcover by Crown Pub (21 August, 2001)
Author: David, Ph.D. Grand
Average review score:

As a former patient of Dr. Grand...
I was pleased to see that he had written a book that explains EMDR and the problems of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder patients. This is a great public service because so many people suffer trauma and could be treated effectively if only those around them had a better understanding and were better able to offer support. Read this book, if you haven't already, for the sake of those around you who suffer from PTSD. Everyone knows someone who has suffered this kind of trauma.

As much as I enjoyed the well-written descriptions of the treatments, the individual cases, and Dr. Grand's personal experiences, I found the chapters that dealt with the EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Program most valuable. Trauma in conflict-ridden areas left untreated, can cause more trauma, be handed down from generation to genertaion, and destroy the lives of multitudes. HAP brings training to war-torn areas and those affected by disasters. There cannot be peace in any part of the world if there is no peace in the minds of individuals.

I highly recommend this book. It is an easy read and certainly worth more than the time it takes to read it.

Not Just for Major Trauma
I found Grand exciting and engaging, because in more than eight years of using EMDR, he has gone beyond the original protocol of work with major trauma to work with ordinary people in extraordinary ways. For example, he was engaged by the New Actor's Workshop in New York City to help train actors in deepening the emotional meaning of their roles and to evaporate stage fright.
He describes how our beliefs hold us back from peak performance in many areas, including sports, and how he has worked with sports figures to help them out of periodic "slumps". He shows that EMDR can be used to help people live in the present, not in the past as those who are depressed, nor in the future as those who are anxious. Everyday people like you and me.
This is a book for the therapist who wants to add another sophisticated tool to help others. It is a book for anyone who wants to pursue emotional growth. Those interested in how beliefs support or diminish emotional well-being might find The Spiritual Connection: Values, Faith, and Psychotherapy of interest.
Grand provides an introduction to EMDR, shows with enthusiasm how it can be used in a variety of cases, and discusses the everyday self-use of bilateral stimulation in such ordinary ways as walking. Any reader interested in the discovery of a truly new method of personal emotional growth will be challenged by this book.

Enjoyable reading about a powerful therapeutic technique
Even though I've read (most of the)other books on EMDR, I found Grand's treatment fresh and engaging. The amazing thing is, that this therapy works so well, and is not more widely known or used. Grand gives special emphasis to the uses of EMDR in both short-term and long-term therapy. Most other books for general audiences emphasize the short-term applications, but Grand illustrates it can also help some longer, more complicated situations. He also discusses EMDR's uses in enhancing peak performance, and this is fresh and interesting. If you are a therapist who uses EMDR, you will probably find this enjoyable. If you are a layman interested in this new therapy this is a good place to start, or continue your reading. Written in a very engaging manner that made it an enjoyable read.

Great Bible
The one and only King James Version. This Bible has everything that a growing child needs. There is the original text combined with easy to follow descriptions and explanations to help your child understand the ideas that are presented. There are special sections such as "Words to Remember", "Let's Live It", "Life in Bible Times", and trivia in the "Did You Know". This is a must have for yout child if you are concerned about what text your child is reading.

Great Bible for Kids
I am a children's pastor and I highly reccommend this book. I use it for my lessons and also in class.

The New Adventure Bible
This Bible is great for young readers and will keep them going well in to High School. There are many graphics throughout this Bible and special interest comments that explain why people did things the way they did or why they wore a particular type of clothing. Our church gave this New Adventure Bible to all children graduating into the third grade. The NIV translation is pretty understandable to young readers. Each book has an introduction that is designed towards the young reader. There are also special pages to enhance a childs understanding: for example in addition to the actual text of the ten commandments - is a special page with pretty graphics that re-word the commandments in language for youth. A special page explains "How to pray" - another summarizes Old Testament Prophets, and yet another page called "Getting to know Jesus" helps kids understand what it means to be a Christian. Just like the 'grown up' Bible - this book is a Red Letter edition. My fifteen year old still loves this Bible.

The Grand Conspiracy
Published in Paperback by iUniverse.com (April, 2001)
Author: William Penn
Average review score:

The Grand Conspiracy
A Grand tale of conspiracy, intrigue, deception, love, with a twist. Fasinating . . . William Penn deftly evokes the contrast between politics and the inspiring landscape of the Rocky Mountains.

What page-turner and barnburner.
What "Into Thin Air" is to rock climbing, what "The Perfect Storm" is to sword fishing, "The Grand Conspiracy" is to Terrorism and High Country Eco-terrorism. In this fast paced thriller, I learned about; the American Revolution, Flying Planes, Mountain Survival Techniques, the Truth behind The Vietnam War and how the Florida Presidential Election was manipulated. All in one novel, whew!

Grand Reading from Two Conspirators
The back cover and Chapter One encapsulate the storyline, and the final outcomes are clear and predictable. However, this is not a mystery novel, but a stunning and accurate tapestry of weaving history with current events. Much of the book deals with WHY the characters are behaving as they are, and that is the real story. The authors are outstanding in providing a clear view of little-known politics wherein the natural resources of a small population are exploited for the benefit of others. Their views on these subjects are clearly given, but without clouding the essential facts. The accuracy and level of detail in technical matters also reveals substantial research and experience in a wide range of subjects. The integration of a website to show full color illustrations that would otherwise increase the cost of the book is quite brilliant and may be the way of the future publications.

Being a pilot intimately familiar with the Granby and Grand Lake area west of Denver I was delighted to find the region portrayed as an integral character itself in the plot. But I am wounded to find yet another public source of information describing our little piece of heaven on earth. Read the book, but stay home.

Heart of the Desert Wild
Published in Paperback by Bryce Canyon Natural History Association (01 September, 2000)
Authors: Greer K. Chesher and Liz Hymans
Average review score:

A magnificent guide to a part of the best place on Earth
I am a Colorado Plateau freak who probably has better than 50 books on the area, and who has taken at least a dozen vacations to the area. Of all of my own books and some I don't own, but have read on the area, this is one of the very best.

The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument was created in 1996. It was long overdue. The monument (And it should be a full-fledged National Park, IMHO.), preserves the most single significant block of Cretaceous strata in the world, numerous exquisite arches and slot canyons of exceptional size and beauty, tremendous geological faults, colorful, spectacular rock formations, fossilized animals and plants, and irreplaceable Native American relics and structures. The area is still being explored and more of these and other wonders are being located each year.

This excellent book covers all of these matters and more in considerable written detail. Magnificent color photography follows the text and lays open this wonderful country for all to see. The text is carefully drafted, and the photos follow the text very well.

If you never have the good fortune to visit this area, this book will give a very fine glimpse into the need for its preservation. If you have visited it, as I have, the book will evoke countless pleasant memories. IF YOU ARE GOING TO VISIT IT, for the first time, or on a repeat basis, read this book thoroughly to make intelligent decision about what to see and do, since you can't possibly see it all in one trip.

This book receives the highest recommendation.

Winner Utah State Book Award for nonfiction!
Heart of the Desert Wild, first book by author Greer Chesher and first complete book for photographer Liz Hymans, won the nonfiction category at the Utah State Book Awards in November 2001! Last year Terry Tempest Williams won that award, and the competition was excellent this year - the third year Utah has participated in the Library of Congress, Center for the Book's program. In addition to the usual information found in interpretive books, "Heart of the Desert Wild" features an opening chapter that describes the importance of public lands in general and this monument in particular. Ms. Hymans, one of the leading professional panoramic photographers in the US, illuminates the text with 135 magnificent photos, and Ms. Chesher's text is both informative and a pleasure to read.

Journey To Another World
This is an excellent book. If you've never been to the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument -- and few have -- you'll want to see this book. It's like a voyage to another planet. And if you have been there, you'll certainly want to have this book. It's a memorable summary of an unforgetable place. The photographs of panoramic photographer Liz Hymans are spectacular -- breath-takingly beautiful. And the text by Greer Chesher graphically captures the amazing details of this exotic land. My words, however glowing, can't do justice to the scope and wonder of this book. So I'll just save my effort -- and save you reading more of this dull review -- to say: Go look at the book itself! You won't be disappointed.

Trial at Grand Marais: A Novel
Published in Hardcover by Rock Creek Pr ()
Author: Gene Andereck
Average review score:

A Great Adventure
Gene Andereck keeps the reader wanting more. The book starts a little wordy and slow, but picks up speed! A clash of two cultures set in a wilderness area, it offered plenty of action.

We Loved It in Iowa
This book was a family choice and read by three of us while on a camping trip. The plot took us from court room to wilderness and back to court room. It was exciting and filled with suspense. The author made us smell the woods, hear the loons, rock in the canoe. We got caught up in the trial and agreed that we actually felt the tension in the court room during Jan Kyle's cross examination of the McLean family. Andereck knows how to develop strong characters. Some of them we loved and others we dispised. We recommend it for young and old alike.

This is a wonderful adventure story!
Trial at Grand Marais is such a good story. Read it and gave copy of the book to my son as a birthday present and he loved it too. Makes a great gift!

Breaking into the Current: Boatwomen of the Grand Canyon
Published in Hardcover by University of Arizona Press (February, 1994)
Author: Louise Teal
Average review score:

Very inspiring -- a wonderful study
A friend who is a river guide gave me this book. I never really understood the fasination with rafting until I read this. The writing leaves a little to be desired, but the subject matter and the information is very moving.

Stories that need telling
A friend told me about this book several years ago when I was raft guiding on the Colorado River a little north of the Grand Canyon. I bought the book, and absolutely loved it. As one of the rare breed of female white water rafting guides, it was amazing to read about other women who shared my passion for the river and for the wild places around us. Breaking into the Current is NOT a male-bashing book; it filled with stories that are waiting to be told--stories by and about interesting women who went into a career that few women would consider entering. I loved reading the stories about Lava Falls, the making of Crystal Rapid, and all the others. Each time I return to the book it makes me ache to be on the river yet again.

This book sings.
A few years back on my first trip through the Grand Canyon I was lucky enough to be in a group that included Louise Teal as one of the guides. I bought this book after the trip and read it on the drive home. I was blown away. Her love of the canyon, the river, the people...it all glows from every page. Rafting the Grand is a life-changing experience; and the elements that make it so are all here--captured and expressed by a woman who has become part of the river and vice versa. She tells the stories of the women who 'broke into the current' with humor, sensitivity, respect and love. On top of all that, she is a very talented writer and this book works purely on that basis. If you've ever run the canyon, buy this book. If you have ever wanted to run it, buy this book. If you've got no interest in the canyon or the Colordo river but enjoy good writing about real stuff, buy this book.

I'm glad I got this.
I had every issue ... of GI Joe but had to sell my collection to make ends meet. Now however I'll be able to enjoy the art, stories and memories I once had with these new paperbacks.Amazon has good shipping time and great prices for these books so get them here. I hope they end up reprinting all ...issues and [the] Special Missions.

He'll Fight For Freedom Wherever There's Trouble!!!!
This is Volume 1 of what i hope to be the entire Gi Joe Marvel Comic Book series reprinted in mind blowing digital color. Volume 1 covers Gi Joe issues 1-10, and I have already gotten Volume 2. for some reason amazon is not showing you the true cover art of the books which is just beautiful!!!! This takes me back to 1982, where Reagan was president, and the Russinas were still the scariest people on the planet and Eddie Murphy was still funny. This volume captures the sweet simplicity of mainstream comic books. All the heroes are good, and the villians are bad. No shades of grey in these here comic books!! Buy this volume. Savor the simplicity of a summer spent reading Gi Joe when it was first run. Don't think of it as marketing a new line of toys, cuz I'd like to think that that was not what the comic was about. it was just good ole fashioned Good VS Evil, and the fate of the world lay in the hands of the men and woman of the GI Joe Team.
YO JOE!!!

Perfect.
I got both volumes one and two. I read these cover to cover to relive the great adventures, rather then getting my original issues out of storage and risk damaging them. I hope Marvel reprints all 155 issues like this. I'll buy every one. Trust me, even though the comics are for a toy line, the stories are really adult and are quite entertaining.

I read both volumes while at work and ended up spending 6 hours lost in the pages.(It was a slow day!)

The Cichlid Fishes: Nature's Grand Experiment in Evolution
Published in Paperback by Perseus Publishing (05 March, 2002)
Author: George W. Barlow
Average review score:

A Grand Narrative
The aquarium lights go out at a certain time every evening, and what's a fishkeeper to do but... read about fish?

Cichlidophiles can find many books on their favorite subject. These works, however, seem to go directly from beginner guides to dry, semi-scientific texts, perhaps poorly translated into English, with nothing in between. But publishing, like nature, abhors a vacuum.

Dr. George W. Barlow has woven together his own research with that of other scientists into a rich narrative of cichlid family history to fill this void. The Cichlid Fishes does read like a family history-flashy cousins, famous uncles, strange ancestors and the like-and science is their family diary.

No mistake, this is a serious exploration of Cichlidian evolutionary success. The important research Barlow and his peers have performed over the decades has answered many questions. Experiments and observation have shown that the Cichlids' spectacular rate of speciation arises from the physical characteristics of their jaws, thus increasing dietary options.

The strength of the research also lies in how many more questions it has raised. For example, the subject of parental care is understandably a dominant theme. The way the Discus feeds its young from secretions in its skin is documented, and the follow on question is, how did mammalian milk production evolve? The body of Cichlid data is a springboard for evolutionary studies everywhere.

Throughout this "serious" work, the reader finds that he or she is studying complex scientific theory painlessly. Barlow writes about his favorite subject with affection and humor, in a way that the hobbyist can enjoy as well as those who make a living in the field of biology. Definitions of scientific terms are seamlessly incorporated into the Cichlid story. After reading this book, you may find yourself spouting off words like "polygynandry" and "trophic" at your next hobbyist club meeting as if you were discussing the weather.

As in any family history, the story includes speculation on the future. What will happen to the fishes in this unsure world? Barlow gives statistics on the state of the Earth's waters and our affect on them, and presents his own opinions on their significance, based on the biology of Cichlids. Will Cichlids have a chance to continue evolving?

You, dear reader, are invited to explore Cichlid Fishes for yourself, in order to form your own opinion.

Surfing the web is something else you can do when the tank lights go out. For more information about The Cichlid Fishes, Dr. Barlow and his work, see his web page.

Excellent addition the natural history collection!
The first thing that needs to be said about this book is that it is NOT a book about keeping cichlids in aquariums. I think that is a misconception some people may get since cichlids are such popular aquarium subjects. If you're looking for information on cichlids in the aquarium, you need to hunt down books by Paul Loiselle or Ad Konings. This is a book about evolutionary science.

The cichlids are really the animal darlings of the evolution field in the same sense that the Galapagos Islands are the geographical Mecca. This book focuses on cichlids from the African Great Lakes: Malawi., Victoria, and Tanganyika. The populations in these lakes have been isolated and thus present a wonderful living experiment in evolution and speciation. The New World members of Cichlidae aren't forgotten - there's plenty of examples from them too.

The text doesn't delve too deeply into scientific theory. It's still a relatively easy read for the layperson. Its aim is to explain why the cichlids fascinate biologists and evolutionists - without getting overly technical. It achieves that goal admirably.

The bibliography is worth the cover price. There are 23 pages of small-print references and a numerical guide to citations by chapter.

If you're an aquarist with an interest in the science behind the fish, a scientist with little experience with fish or evolution, or a "normal" person wondering what all the fuss is about, this is a good choice.

Well done: Real aquarist needs evolutionary aspects
Clear, understandable and enjoyable, Mr Barlow's book helped me gain much insight about the evolutionary aspects of cichlid behaviours. Some of the cited examples for behavioral patterns are really spectacular! Male C. nicaraguense cichlids protecting the young of a foreign species, C. dovi, a large predatory cichlid species in Lake Nicaragua... I have never heard of something like that among fish. And the reasoning behind this behavior in the evolutionary sense... Or catfish raising the babies of cichlids in Malawi lake... It is always a new surprise to me to see once again how inventive the evolution is.

This is the kind of book I like most; based on scientific facts but written in a reader friendly manner, fully understandable and enjoyable. Thanks to spectacular examples and their clear explanations, very interesting too...

Grand Inquisitor
Published in Paperback by Ungar Pub Co (December, 1981)
Authors: Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Fyodor M. Dostoevsky, and Anne Fremantle
Average review score:

"We shall allow them even SIN...and they will adore us"
Dostoyevsky's GRAND INQUISITOR may be the most profound work of literature penned in any time, place or language.Found at the center of his masterwork, THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV,"The Legend of the Grand Inquistor" is dazzling, dangerous and terrifying exploration(approxiamtely 12 pp!)of deepest needs and fears of mankind. It's unparalled MYTH; and spiritual evisceration of CONSCIENCE--guardian and source of humanity's nature and freedom--wherein the individual soul WARS with God; the Devil;and himself for dignity and personal SALVATION(or existenital sanity).

The Inquisitor is THE ANTI-CHRIST. "The Legend" prophetically illuminates Biblical Mystery of THE THREE TEMPTATIONS with which Satan challenged Christ in the desert...to perpetually threaten, beguile and mock(?)mankind. It's impossible to more than hint the "fear and trembling" evoked by Dostoyevsky's TRIAL of TRUTH in defiance of Truth by Novus Ordo Seclorum "gods" man will worship (in their imagined self-apotheosis). Dostoyevsky is merciless allowing the voice of his arch-cynic,nihilist Ivan Karamazov to scorn humanity's struggle for survival in Goodness; over against would-be UBERMENSCHEN...like himself...agenda to pacify/enslave millions pretending to protect "the masses" from Freedom. To the power-hungry, Man's Freedom is cause of human misery(rather than signum and source of GREATNESS...love & goodness/will in choice)."WE SHALL ALLOW THEM EVEN SIN...THEY WILL ADORE US: Every sin will be expiated if...done with our permission..."

Staggering implications of these words profoundly stir with bitter truth and challenge. In our century we've witnessed CAPTIVE MINDS(so-called by Czeslaw Milosz)willingly slaughter...or consent to slaughter;enslave or inhumanly marginalize...millions. Nazi and Communist Totalitarians of our epoch are easy targets of rebuke. They had SUPREME COURTS proclaiming legal(physical; spiritual; psychological)massacre of millions,"if it is done with our permission." DOSTOYEVSKY is not for everyone. But for thinking men or women, he is a PROPHET as blessed and cursed as any who ever lived or "cried out in the desert."T.S. Eliot observed "men can truly bear only a little truth." Ray Bradbury noted GOODNESS IS A FEARFUL OCCUPATION."The Legend of the Grand Inquisitor"may be literature's greatest, if most painful examination of the Mystery of Man--made in God's Image--in Civilization's death stuggle against criminal intellectuals and power-driven, self-celebrated saviors who barter and betray Humanity for apotheosis in self-praise and others'blood.(10 Stars)

Thought Provoking
The Grand Inquisitor loves humanity but the question is: Is he misguided? The Grand Inquisitor is by no means a trivial person. According to Dostoyevsky most humans are by nature incapable of handling freedom, of taking care of their basic needs, of accepting the moral responsibility of conscience or of living with differences - we like to be sheep - apparently. "[...] Thee, what is to become of the millions and tens of thousands of millions of creatures who will not have the strength to forego the earthly bread for the sake of the heavenly? Or dost Thou care only for the tens of thousands of the great and strong, while the millions, numerous as the sands of the sea, who are weak but love Thee, must exist only for the sake of the great and strong? No, we care for the weak too. They are sinful and rebellious, but in the end they too will become obedient. They will marvel at us and look on us as gods, because we are ready to endure the freedom which they have found so dreadful and to rule over them- so awful it will seem to them to be free. But we shall tell them that we are Thy servants and rule them in Thy name. We shall deceive them again, for we will not let Thee come to us again. That deception will be our suffering, for we shall be forced to lie" (Dostoyevsky 8-9).

Dostoyevsky, in The Grand Inquisitor, arrives at this conclusion since his observations suggest that this has been the pattern of human behavior from the beginning of human history. Ti interpret the quote above, Dostoyevsky does believe there is a relatively small group (tens of thousands) of people who are different by nature and who can do for themselves, handle responsibility and conscience and not only live with difference, but even create it. Again, he appeals to experience, being able to cite these people in human history. When Jesus lands in Inquisition Spain, he is quickly arrested. He confronts Jesus for giving people inner freedom. Christianity proper was built for the few: only the minority go to Heaven because Christianity has very high standards: 'narrow is the way to Heaven' and 'it is easier for a candle to enter the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to enter Heaven' Yet, religion in general is catered to the masses, most of whom believe they are going to Heaven. There is a contradiction there, and Dostoyevsky zeroes in on that The Inquisitor proceeds to list three temptations that the Catholic Church has remedied. "From those questions alone, from the miracle of their statements, we can see that we have here to do not with the fleeting human intelligence, but with the absolute and eternal. For in those three questions the whole subsequent history of mankind is, as it were, brought together into one whole, and foretold, and in them are united all the unsolved historical contradictions of human nature" (Dostoyevsky 7).

To summarize the issues from the quote above: [1] First temptation: MIRACLE (Dostoyevsky 7). [2] Second temptation: MYSTERY (Dostoyevsky 10). [3] Third temptation: AUTHORITY (Dostoyevsky 14). According to the Inquisitor, the Church fills the people's need for a sense of unity. The Church has removed all temptations by being the conscience of the people. Do we really need the illusion or can and should we be able to think for ourselves? Where does Dostoyevsky REALLY stand on this issue? Read it and judge for yourself.

Miguel Llora

Five stars PLUS
"The Grand Inquisitor" is a story embeded within THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV. However, the story is "self-contained." Nothing is lost by reading it as a complete short story. In my opinion, "The Grand Inquisitor" is the greatest single story ever written. It's an interesting look at humanity, spirituality, and the church. If you are only going to read one more thing before you die, you must read "The Grand Inquisitor."
*This particular edition, however, seems to have some typos that were not caught by the proof-reader, but they're nothing very serious.
